always feeling guilty and
full of remorse.
the Baptist church
had you singing and shaking
hands with pretty
girls in sundresses,
eating a lot of potluck
dinners and
going to prayer breakfasts
in the early mornings
to make pancakes.
the Lutheran church presented
you and your
young wife
with a key to the front
door in front of the entire
congregation.
they wanted you to carry a
saddlebag
from door to door
collecting donations, then
play softball.
in Appalachia you sat in on
a clapboard
house, now a church and watched
and ducked as
they threw snakes around,
spitting out
the venom with their mouths.
and then there was the Jesus
Movement
in the 70's,
where you let your hair grow,
and you sat
around with like minded
people in a garden apartment
and gave
them as much money as you
could afford.
