giving it a second life

when

i lived in a first floor

apartment off Brinkley Road

in Temple Hills Maryland

there was

a trash room right outside

the door

of my unit.

i found

a large green

leafy plant in a white

pot in there

one day,

so i took it in.

someone who had moved

left it in there.

i befriended

this lonely plant

and set it by my sliding

glass door

with a protective broom

handle

in the bottom.

i pulled back my frayed

blue drapes

and let the sun in.

i watered the plant,

i talked to it,

misting it with a spray

bottle.

we became friends, but

then i moved.

and into the trash room 

it went again.
