the local handyman

if something broke,
back
in the day, and by the day,
i mean
forty years ago,
when men
would come to your house
with a bag
of tools
and fix whatever the problem
was.
washer, dryer,
the fuse box,
the television.
maybe the screen door
was off
its hinges,
or a windowpane was cracked.
in an hour the house would
be back up
and running.
you'd give them water,
or coffee,
and maybe a slice
of crumb cake.
you got their number from
a friend who
got it from
a friend, etc..
they came highly
recommended through
the grape vine.
you left them alone
to work,
and when they were done,
you paid them in cash,
then stood
at the door to wave
as they drove away in
their beat up
white van after pulling
up their baggy
pants.
