an early morning run

when you
were a runner, before
the knees
gave out,
before
the hair thinned
and silvered,
you'd tie your shoes
in the early
morning,
whether rain or shine,
snow
or ice
and run.
sometimes three miles,
sometimes
five.
after one mile,
you'd at last find your stride.
it was easy.
how your mind would wander,
how you'd solve so much
by the turn
around
in that morning light.
