share salespeople
surrounded
us in their
bright yellow shirts
and brown
jackets,
they
put a pen in my hand.
pushed
the contract
before me, and said
go ahead
sign it.
you won't regret it.
we promise.
you play golf, right?
no.
you swim,
you like volleyball
and tennis, right?
no.
no, well,
that's okay.
we have free bikes.
free skateboards
for the kids.
paddle boarding and
fishing is your thing
right?
no.
well, that's okay,
look at the view,
look at the ocean out the window.
it's all yours,
and well, you and
forty other couples who
you will coordinate with
for your one weekend
out of the year.
but listen to that beach noise,
the waves,
the raucous crowds
on the boardwalk,
the chatter of it all.
and if you don't want to hear that,
watch this,
as i slide closed this thick
glass door.
poof, the noise is gone.
the maintenance fees will
only go up ten
percent at the start of each
new year.
and the assessments will
never be more
than twenty thousand
dollars every five years.
smoking is allowed as are
pets of all kinds.
now go ahead and sign.
please, if you don't sign
we have others right out
the door waiting for this unit,
they're chomping
at the bit,
waiting in line.
here, let me pour you another
drink.
gin and tonic,
wine?
