to our pets, our dogs
and cats,
our parakeets
in a cage,
we whisper sweet
nothings to
our horses in the barn,
the pigs in the trough,
as if they
understand everything
we say.
we apply emotions to them
as if they're
one of us,
telling
the snake
in the sawdust,
be good sweetie, we'll
be home soon,
now eat your mouse,
and take a nap.
night, night.
we tell them to be
good,
to behave while
we're away.
