to turn it off, this observational
mode
you're stuck in
and seem to have been
born with.
you cannot help but notice
the woman
eating
a sandwich on the bench,
sipping her
drink, then daintily
wiping her pink lips.
the man
walking by,
with his drawers half
down,
revealing his green
underpants.
you notice the boredom
of the store clerk
checking your
groceries,
blank eyed and tired,
the tension at the courthouse
as people file in,
before
life decisions are made.
whether jail
or divorce.
you even
see the squirrels fighting
over an acorn
at the park,
the pigeons
flying upwards with a wad
of chewing gum
in their mouth.
