the pandemic i met a girl

we met
at the old caboose in Herndon.
she was wearing
a triple ply mask
that nuclear scientists use,
and a plastic
shield over her head.
orange hazmat overalls
covered the rest of her body.
she reminded me of an astronaut
in a 2001 Space Odyssey.
i could barely
understand a word
she was saying as we sat
at a picnic table,
six feet apart,
so we stopped trying to talk
and texted each other.
i couldn't see her face,
or if she was skinny or tubby,
i could only see her
eyes, which were blue,
but very blood shot from worry.
she showed me her
vaccination card, stamped
three times and asked
me for mine.
to which i said, whoops.
sorry forgot to bring it.
i can still see her running,
tripping and falling,
to get away from me in
her oversized astronaut boots.
