dining in alone

we eat
differently when alone,
when there's
no one there to judge us while
eating dinner
at the coffee
table in front of the tv.
there we are gnawing on a fried
chicken or steak
bone
ravenously, like
a wild animal, clearing
it of meat,
drinking milk from
the carton.
how easily
we lick our fingers,
and eat
with the wrong fork,
sometimes
even using a spoon for
the mashed potatoes,
then Jello.
toothpicks at the ready.
napkins are for the weak,
why bother when
you have two perfectly
good long sleeves.
