disco fever

it was in
the seventies when she caught
a bad
case of
disco fever.
she had to go out dancing
every night
of the week
in her wild
dresses
with her hair down
and a flower
behind her ear.
she was drinking cosmos
back then,
and driving a beat up
Chevy Vega
with blue smoke coming out
the tail pipes.
we met in a downtown
bar just as they called
out last
call for alcohol
and the lights went up.
she didn't know i was 27
at the time,
and i didn't know
she was 17, but soon to be
18 in March.,
or so she said.
it lasted for about twelve
years.
a few kids later, a few
dogs,
a few townhouses with
orange shag
carpet and then the lawyers
took over.
i think about her now and
then,
the glitter ball above her
as Donna Summer
belted out another song.
