the swing of the wrecking ball

how quickly
buildings rise and fall.
the stories within
dying with them.
the families
raised.
the lives they
led.
the balconies they sat
upon,
the pool beside
the lot,
long summers there,
the barbeque.
the elevators never
prompt,
fire alarms going off.
so many babies carried in,
the dead
rolled out.
all
forgotten in clouds of dust,
by the swing
of a wrecking ball,
replaced
by what's new,
what's next to rise up.
