born into it

as you drive
down 404 with corn and soy
fields on either
side of the single
lane road, stretching out for
hundreds of acres,
you see
the white, or pale blue,
clap board houses.
set out
beyond the long gravel
driveways.
there's a swirl of smoke,
a grey flag
waving
out of chimneys.
you see
a tractor idled
near a barn while
a small circle of gravestones
is revealed at the next
curve of the dotted
white lines.
you wonder what goes on
here.
how did these people
get here?
what life is this?
between the rows of corn.
