in the air
on a ladder painting a window
in Old Town Alexandria,
when i heard
the crash and boom
of the terrorist plane
that hit the pentagon.
i had my little red transistor
radio sitting on sill
as i listened to Howard Stern
bringing the convoluted news.
(though hate him now).
the owners of the house came
out in a panic,
their luggage packed in a hurry
then tossed into
the back of their Volvo.
we're leaving for the country
they yelled up to me.
lock up before you leave.
i finished that window,
then climbed down the ladder
and went to the next
window, carrying up my
bucket of paint, the brush
and my radio.
there was five more windows
to go, then lunch.
