beach food galore

as we
sit on the bench at Rehobeth Beach,
relaxing on the short
boardwalk,
licking
our third ice cream cone of the week,
we look out
at the people passing by,
with their shadows getting
progressively larger
by the minute,
we realize that vacation
is about eating and getting
a sunburn
and buying
t-shirts
with memes
on the front and back.
there goes a corn dog walking by.
cotton candy,
a pink bright cloud
of it in a child's hand.
the Bobbsey twins are both
eating a large slice
of pizza as they waddle forward
in their
moo moos and flip flops.
and oh my, is that a funnel
cake?
a chicken leg?
do i pray tell see a glazed
donut
and a moon pie?
there's the sweet smell of
chocolate covered
fried waffles
in the sea air
while diabetic seagulls hover
nearby.
i see a clothing store on the corner.
selling stretch pants,
hopefully they have a pair
in my new size.
prayer sent up.
i suggest that maybe
on the way home we can
break into
that box of saltwater taffy
that you bought for your mother,
she'll never know.
