the heavy yellow coat

not everyone, but many,
who live
long enough
will wear it.
that coat.
the heavy coat,
whether
grey or black, or
faded and frayed
a dirty yellow.
you'll see them on the benches
at the park,
or pushing
a cart through the grocery
store.
widowed
or perpetually single,
the children
far off.
their eyes, seconds away
from weeping,
their bodies,
hours away from giving
up.
friends are mere memories,
young still
in the photo box.
we want to live to be
an old man
or an old woman,
but then enough
is enough.
