tires me out.
my eyes are red
as i drive on
the open road, hands on
the wheel.
every town looks like
the town
i just passed.
the same stores, the same
gas stations
and billboards.
franchises from end to end.
somehow i want more.
i want
what doesn't exist.
i want yesterday,
men in felt hats and grey
suits,
women in long
dresses.
children on swings
and playing jacks.
a steam engine rolling
by
blowing its whistle.
i want an ice cream
shop,
a hardware store.
wheat fields and apple orchards.
i want to see
dogs running free along the field.
i want green stamps
and a diner
with pancakes
and a waitress that calls
me hon.
i want a town that hasn't
changed
for once.
