we'd sit in the living room,
on the cold floor,
as snow fell,
and turn
page after page of
the Sears Catalogue,
making a mental note
of things
we'd like to have
for Christmas.
everything under the sun
was in it.
the book was at least
five hundred pages thick,
heavy as a cinder block.
we licked our fingers
and turned the thin pages,
which were
no different than my mother's
Catholic bible.
methodically we
worked our way
through it,
sometimes using a magic marker
to circle whatever, it was that
caught our interest.
sometimes we'd pray.
