it must be to be famous.
to be a celebrity,
whether a singer or artist,
perhaps on stage or
on Broadway, or on
a big movie screen.
struggling
with all those lines to memorize,
not knowing where
to stand or exit,
will it be stage left,
or stage right?
what difficult lives
they must lead
always being recognized
when out on the street.
the paparazzi
taking pictures, the fans
wanting autographs.
never being left alone,
never enjoying any privacy,
locked behind
the gates of their prosperity,
but i suspect it's not
quite as hard as being a roofer
thirty feet up in the air
on a slate roof,
in the blistering July heat,
or a plumber, as well,
on his knees
with a wrench in hand,
adjusting a porcelain seat.
