on the train going across town.
i miss my stop.
at the end
the conductor wakes me up,
shaking my
shoulder.
you have to get off here, he says.
sorry, it's the last stop.
i wipe the sleep out
of my eyes
as he waits for me to get up.
he's tired too.
he has his lunch pail
in his hand,
a thermos.
his coat and hat are on.
there's a red scarf around
his neck.
maybe his wife
gave it to him one Christmas.
it's cold,
which makes me shiver.
let's go, he says. let's go.
he helps me up
by my arm.
it's been a long day underground
for the both of us.
