the cereal box before you

how interested
you were
at a young age in reading
cereal boxes,
as you
slurped another spoonful
of milk
and honey oats
into your mouth.
a luxury with this meal
would
be toast,
which you didn't have.
but the box held your eyes,
the red
and orange colors,
all bright,
the bold print,
the tiny ingredient label,
as you read
each side.
it told you nothing about
life,
and yet like now,
as you stare into your phone
you press on,
hoping.
