the gift horse

i gave her a horse for Christmas.
a chestnut
horse.
lean and fast.
but it didn't make her happy.
i put a saddle
on the horse, fed it oats,
fed it grass.
gave it water.
take a ride, i told her.
give it chance.
but she said no, i don't want
a horse
i don't want any gifts that
cost more
than a dollar.
it's too much. i'm not worthy.
how dare you show love
like that.
