i'd bring a lemon cake
to a gathering,
to a party,
iced
with cream cheese frosting.
it was my thing
for a while.
don't ask me why,
why lemon,
why not chocolate or spice
cake.
why not vanilla?
it's one of life's great mysteries
i suppose.
and here i stand with
the mixer,
staring into the yellow batter
swirling in the big
blue bowl.
