should have slept in that day

it was raining that day.
dark and dreary.
the day
we went down to get the marriage
license.
it was cold.
windy.
i was hungry,
tired.
she seemed determined though,
needing
a place
to live and money to live
off of
since her married
boyfriend
went back to the wife,
and cut off her
cash flow.
where else was there to go?
i couldn't see
the sticker stuck to the back
of my clothes,
saying sucker.
i think it was fifty bucks
at the little
metal window, where
we both signed the agreement,
and an old woman
named Alma,
stamped
the piece of paper, and said
good luck
in a foreboding
tone.
