getting back in the game

i think

i can drive today, i tell myself,

looking

in the mirror

at my swollen

face

and head.

letting

the walls hold me up.

today is the day i get

back behind

the wheel

and go somewhere,

buy

more things i don't need.

in a few

hours

when the remaining haze

of anesthesia wears off,

i'll be back in the game,

i'll be back

out there

getting things

done.

but for now

i just need a short nap

and maybe

an ice pack

on my nose.
