saved
rubber bands and string,
paper
bags, plastic
bags,
empty coffee tins.
in the back room
were
boxes stacked together,
old magazines.
People,
Life, National Geographic
and Playboy.
a child of the great
Depression,
he saw value
in everything.
whether tv's that had died,
or clothes
that no long fit
his size.
his key ring
had fifty keys on it,
despite
one lock on the door
and no car,
no longer being fit to drive.
but the back door,
never locked,
was always wide
open,
as he cut out coupons
on his mother's sofa,
hoping to save
one penny more.
