like cattle worn and beaten
from the trail
to the slaughter
houses
you see them
in the stores,
at the parks, shopping,
reading,
waiting
for whatever it is
that's supposed to happen
next.
they gather in small
groups
at coffee houses,
walking the mall,
you see them
in night classes at
the community centers
or
searching for
their golf ball in the woods.
it's not about
money anymore, that game
is over.
it's the hours between
morning and sleep
that are troublesome.
no one
prepares you for
this.
