Cupid must die

as i walk into the store,
i begin
to tremble,
sweat, i start getting nervous,
the tic
returns to my left eye.
my heart
is palpitating.
it's back.
Valentine's Day has
once again
returned.
three weeks in advance.
the pink boxes of candy,
the flowers
the endless rows of
cards.
balloons, and heart
shaped chocolates
and gifts.
dear lord, why O why?
who started this mess?
i see the fat cherub
at the cash
register,
his wings, his arrows,
his French fry
greasy lips.
Cupid must die, we need
to end this.
