welfare birds

it seemed
like a good idea at the time.
the bird
house in the middle of the yard
standing tall
on a metal pole.
it was green,
with a slanted roof and large
hole
with a front porch.
i filled it with seed nearly
everyday,
sometimes almost
twice a day.
i'd look out the window
and see a hundred birds
lined up
on the fence
waiting their turn.
birds of all colors, all feathers.
small, large,
fat, tiny,
yellow and black, red and blue.
not to mention
the squirrels who did acrobatic
maneuvers to get
their share too.
once the house was up,
the word got out, the birds
got fat
and lazy.
they lost all ambition.
why work at pulling worms
from the ground
or searching for berries,
when the government
or me
will feed you for free?
