to Costa Rica to have her teeth
worked on.

the price when compared
to the local
dentists.
and now she lives there.
she says
she'll never come back until
it's safe again.
when the politics change.
when they give up on the idea
of borders
and police,
and ownership
of property and things.
she sends me a picture
of her on
the beach with a coconut
she cracked
open with a rock.
i can see her beautiful
new smile
in the photo.
there's a monkey nearby
eating a banana,
while rummaging through
her purse,
also with good teeth.
