taking
a kid to a pet store,
they want
the cat
in the cage,
the kitten curled
in a ball,
the dog barking alone
behind the glass,
gnawing on
a plastic bone.
they want
to save them all
and bring them home.
they start to cry
and beg.
but you say no, no, no.
next time it's a trip
to the zoo
instead.
