to understand the world
and the people in it,
you have to dig.
you have to get the shovel
out and dig,
go deep into the soil,
break through
the rocks,
the sediment,
the layers of silt.
the granite, the lime.
go down to the crust of it,
to the beginning
of time,
but even then it stays
a mystery,
a never ending why.
