winter
in memory, perhaps,
perhaps.
the drifts
were over the cars,
the railroad was closed.
the pipes froze,
the lights went out
as power
lines went down.
people got sick
and died
in their homes with
no way to be rescued.
the young,
the old. and yet
more babies were
conceived
in those three months
than
in the last ten years
together.
nature has a way of
evening things out.
