taking a higher road

whether drink
or drugs, or sex, or exercise,
or work,

we find something, or someone
to soothe
our aches.

to alleviate the pain we've
accumulated
after life on earth

hasn't been so great.

we need a fix of some sort,
or we bury our heads
in the sand
and submerge

our troubles, never getting
right,
or healthy.

it's the easy way out, the one
we've always taken,

not the other road, the hard
road,
the path to freedom, free
from the bonds

the mistakes we've made.
it's a difficult way to go,
but it's the only
way.
