the puzzle almost done

the furniture is the same
as it was in 1977.

the plaid couch.
the heavy drapes. a painting
of a ship
on some far away sea.

she sits at the table doing
todays crossword puzzle.

he's looking for his cane.

the kids are gone,
off to their own lives,
with children of their own.

there's no tv on, no radio.
just the quiet chirp
of birds at the feeder.

they are in no rush to have
the work done,
no rush for anything.

all the hurry has been done.

coffee? she says, looking up
from the folded
paper,
the puzzle almost done.
