had the sneaking suspicion
that
the mothers-in-law
were never
on my side.
sure they played the game,
gave kisses
on the cheek,
and
made sweet small talk
as they
cut the coffee cake
and poured
out the tea.
but deep inside i felt
the resentment
coming from
their smiles.
i wasn't good enough
for the princess
of the house.
how dare i marry off
their daughter,
steal her away
from their motherly
claws.
