his mother's son

my son
yelled at me when i held
him
in my arms,
crying and screaming
for me to buy
him something
at the store
that he already had, but
in a different color.
he wouldn't settle down.
he was nearly four.
i love you,
he told me as we left
the store with
tears running down
his face.
banging his
little fists
against my chest.
i love you, but i'm very
very mad
at you.
you have the money
and this isn't
fair.
his mother taught him well.
