cutting up earth worms

as kids
when we went fishing
in the potomac river
five miles
from where we lived,
we'd get up
early to find worms
in the back yard.
digging them
up under
the wet grass with a spoon
we found
in the kitchen.
the sun would barely
be up.
ten worms was plenty
to last the whole
day.
cutting them into
thirds
with a pen knife,
then
placing them in a
sandwich bag.
we were good at math,
not so much at fishing.
