i was way down

on her totem pole.

kids, parents,

job, dog,

house.

etc. came first.

i wasn't even on the pole.

i was somewhere

on the ground.

a rug to wipe

her feet upon.

an errand boy waiting

for the bell to ring,

for me to come

and help her out.
