up the mountain.
i've been told the view
is life changing, but
after about a half mile,
i stop and sit on a rock.
i take my shoes off and rub
my feet.
i see a blister coming on.
i'm thirsty and i have to pee.
i look up the steep hill
as couples pass me by.
boy scout troops and
old people with walkers.
they all seem so
happy with their hiking
boots and hiking sticks,
their hiking clothes
and binoculars.
i look back down to where
my car is parked. i can
see it. i think i can make
it back down if i go slowly.
