not everyone gets chosen

when you meet the unwashed
the haggard
and beaten
rising out from under the brambles
of bridges
shading their eyes
in the morning sun
as they leave
shelters
with everything they own
upon them.
when you hear
the brutality of their past,
the hopelessness
of the future, you realize
that not everyone
gets chosen,
that some, despite all,
must come in
last.
