finding sleep

during the war
finding sleep was hard
as the bombs
dropped,
as the guns
filled the sky
with boom and light.
sleep
was a rare commodity.
in those times.
a ditch would
do,
a basement, cold and
wet, an uneasy dark,
but safe, seemed fine.
but in the end
only a warm bed
could give you what you needed.
let the bombs fall,
the rafters crumble,
at least in death
you'd finally get what you
wanted so badly,
for so long.
