the open road

it's a long drive home
from Annapolis. the traffic thick
with holiday travel
you can see the children
asleep in the cars,
the boxes wrapped and bowed,
stacked high.
the parents at the wheel,
weary and tired, wanting to
get to where they need to go.
so many miles before they sleep.
for me too. me too, as I steer
my life forward and find
the open road.
