barking

the dog,

not unlike me, refused

to learn

any new tricks,

it never begged

or rolled over

and played dead.

no jumping through

hoops.

no chasing a ball

for no good reason.

he enjoyed life,

short as it was,

barking

at what whatever

was going on beyond

the window.
