running away from home

the first time i ran away from home.
my mother
found me in the basement
in the box
the new dryer came in.
i had my flashlight and twelve
comic books
and a grape nehi soda.
where have you been, she
said.
we've been calling your name
and looking all over the
neighborhood
for you.
i've run away i told her,
continuing to read.
wiping the purple stripe of soda
off my lips.
well. when you come home
again,
dinner is almost ready.
so wash up and come upstairs.
we'll see, i said, to which she
sighed and rolled her eyes.
you're a strange little fellow,
aren't you.
maybe. i said and shone
the flashlight into her
worried face.
