in a way,
the siren wailing over the elementary
school,
us under our desks,
protected by
paper
and wood, the teacher
trying to keep
us calm
before telling us to run
home to our
homes,
our dad and moms.
we didn't understand, but
we were happy
to have
an early afternoon off.
we wondered
if doing our
homework was even
necessary once the bombs
began to drop,
creating a beautiful
field of mushrooms.
