to a non-profit think tank
in the city.
it seems like a great job,
he doesn't go to work
until ten a.m. and he gets
home by two.
he has a nice house, a nice
car, a lawn service
and i see that there are
four delivered newspaper
on his front porch.
i ask him if there are any
openings down at the think
tank. he looks at me,
and says. hmmm,
then takes the pipe out of his
mouth and brushes
his beard with his hand.
i tell him, look, i can think
just as good as the next
guy. give me a subject.
any subject and i can
think about it for hours.
if someone cuts me off on
the highway, i think about that
for days.
i'm a dog with a bone when
it comes to thinking
about stuff like that.
it's not like that, he says.
we're trying to solve
the worlds problems.
like what?
well, crime and war,
homelessness, the climate.
big issues. the rising ocean.
artificial intelligence
and the future of life on this planet.
but maybe that's the reason
nothing is getting done,
i tell him.
we need to think about the
little issues. i could be that guy.
i could think about pot holes
in the street and why
it takes so long to get them
fixed, or how come it costs
so much for coffee now.
and why don't they use the words
small, medium and large
when you order.
umm, okay, i'll think about it,
he says. and i'll let you know.
great, i tell him.
i'm going to the store now
to see if i can find any
button down sweaters
with patches on the elbows.
