the basement wedding

it was a small wedding.
me
her
a man named Herman
in baggy
jeans and topsiders.
she'd put a
white cloth
on the glass table
and a statue of Mary.
two candles.
an altar.
she told the man to take
the word Obey,
out of the vows,
then it was over, she
winked at me
after we slipped rings
onto one another's
fingers.
i cringed and got a chill
down my spine.
it felt like the devil had
won.
had somehow gotten
his way.
i was soon to learn
how true
that feeling was.
