to let her dog lick her face,
her ears,
her nose,
her lips,
sometimes she'd bend
over to cuddle
with the pooch
and tongues
would touch. she'd laugh
and explain
to me how a dog's mouth
was sterile,
clean and germ free.
she said
there was nothing to worry
about no matter
where that dog's tongue
had been.
no matter what kind
of dead thing
it ate.
i never kissed
her again
after that, or licked the same
spoon or fork
that she used.
the breakup was hard
to explain.
