you hear the words,
a work
in progress,
it's not good.
the marriage, the relationship,
the job,
the book
you're writing,
the project you're on.
it's a sign of
imminent failure
looming ahead.
so when i hear my wife
on the phone
telling her mother
that i'm a work in
progress,
i sadly shake my head
and pour
another drink.
