the water rises suddenly as the river
overflows.
people are shoeless walking
through the knee deep water.
people take pictures, gather around
to look
at how the river
has risen
and taken the corner, half way
up the block.
there is almost joy in the air,
a festival
of sorts. even the police are happy,
with their orange batons
and lights
flickering.
the energy of something gone awry,
making everyone
wide eyed and
curious, getting close
to where the water rose.
wondering which way now to go.
